Relayogram, relayograph or relay is a technology in the Weird West that allows for messages to be sent from one location to another. Relay offices in towns, often found within post offices, let people send relays to family and acquaintances. A relay can be sent by tapping the codes on a transmitter, sending it via airwaves using relay towers to a receiver, then the relay clerk on that end translates it into a readable message.[1]

Portable relays, a relatively new invention that is small enough to wear on one's arm, allow a person to receive a message from anywhere, although it's not possible to send one. These small devices have been credited with helping bounty hunters track down their targets.[2] According to relay clerks, each portable relay has a small antenna and a wind-up crank.[1]

Trivia[]

  • In post offices portable relays are displayed on mannequins and with plagues that say "THE PORTABLE RELAY: CONNECTING THE WEST. A fine new invention that will revolutionize our ability to communicate with settlements near and far. Receive messages even on the trail! Order yours today."
